Death Railway: Sasikumar Plays INA Officer in WWII Drama
Dharani Rasendran, director of Yaathisai, has unveiled Death Railway, a 1944-set war drama with Sasikumar as an INA officer. Here’s the cast, crew and story backdrop.

Most Indian films about the freedom struggle stay inside India's borders. Death Railway looks set to tell a story from the battlefields of Burma instead. Director Dharani Rasendran, known for the critically acclaimed period war film Yaathisai, has revealed the title of his new project and released a glimpse video to mark his birthday. Director-actor Sasikumar leads the film as an officer of the Indian National Army (INA).
The glimpse sets the period quickly with striking visuals and on-screen text. The year is 1944. World War II is raging and Japanese forces are moving through Burma towards India. The film focuses on a lesser-known part of that history. While India fought for freedom at home, Indian soldiers were fighting a silent battle on distant borders.
A Forgotten Front Comes to the Big Screen
That angle is what makes Death Railway stand out. The INA and the Burma campaign shaped India's road to independence in important ways, but mainstream Indian cinema has rarely gone there. The title will also be familiar to history readers. "Death Railway" was the name widely given to the Burma–Siam railway built during the war, a project remembered for the huge loss of life among the labourers forced to build it. The makers have not yet said how the film connects to that history, so the full story is still under wraps.
