Hansa Singh Reflects on Her Evolution as an Actor
Actress Hansa Singh shares insights on her growth, empathy, and resilience shaped by years of performing diverse characters.
Actress Hansa Singh, celebrated for her impactful performances in projects such as Goodbye and Criminal Justice, has reflected deeply on how years of embodying diverse characters have shaped her personality, emotional understanding, and professional values. Speaking candidly, she shared how acting continues to influence both her internal world and her approach to life.
Hansa reveals that observation remains one of the most essential skills she has honed as an actor. “Being observant is a nuance of an actor,” she says. “I watch people closely—their behaviour, the subtleties in the way they express themselves. These nuances may seem small, but they significantly enrich one's craft.”
While many assume that acting automatically enhances empathy, Hansa believes life experiences hold greater influence. “Acting in life and acting on camera are two different things,” she explains. “I always tell aspiring actors that we have been acting in life long before the camera arrived. Understanding people comes with time and experience. Today, I can see beyond the obvious because life has taught me to.”
Her journey has also been shaped by working closely with diverse teams, technicians, and co-actors. She considers learning an ongoing process. “I am learning till I die,” she says firmly. “The moment I stop learning, I stop living. I remain grounded with on-set crew members and actors. Everyone has something to offer, and I gain from each interaction.”
Despite her professional warmth, Hansa prefers to keep personal relationships low-key. “I have not evolved close off-screen bonds. I keep things cordial. I know if I reach out to someone, I will be received well, but I am most comfortable working closely with my directors—that’s where my creative alignment lies.”

When speaking about emotional sensitivity, she acknowledges that acting has helped her better understand herself. “I am sensitive by nature—being a Pisces plays a role. But I also consciously detach from my characters once I return home. Playing varied roles has made me more aware of who I am.”
Survival in the entertainment industry requires more than talent, she notes. Hansa admits that she had to adapt to the business side of the profession. “I am inherently a creative person, but in this industry, having a good agent is important. I have learnt to think like a manager while performing like an actor. Talking about finances isn’t something I enjoy, but I’ve learned to say ‘no’ when something undervalues my craft or experience.”
For newcomers, Hansa’s advice focuses on balance, discipline, and self-awareness. “Be focused, but do not let the profession consume you,” she cautions. “Today’s generation is very smart—they know how to climb the ladder. But for serious actors, patience and working on your craft matter more than building a muscular body. Know your strengths and your weaknesses. Patience is a virtue.”
To maintain emotional stability in a demanding field, Hansa turns to activities that rejuvenate her. “I fall back on salsa dancing, traveling, and life coaching. I disconnect from the world when I need to. Life has evolved, and so have I. Now, my priority is self-care. I have earned the luxury of staying away from toxicity.”
She concludes by embracing solitude as a healthy space. “I don’t talk much while traveling unless necessary. Sometimes, I let even that pass. I have earned this privilege for my sanity—no one else can do that for me.”
