Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam Arranges Vijay’s Meeting with Victims’ Families at Mahabalipuram Resort

On September 27th, a stampede erupted at an actor-turned-politician Vijay's party rally, Tamilaga VettriKazhagam, in Karur district of Tamil Nadu. 41 were killed and more than 100were  injured in the stampede. In the wake of the accident, Vijay had assured that he would meet the victims. Five weeks later, Vijay has yet to meet them. Now, there are reports that he may meet the families of the victims in Mahabalipuram, near Chennai, on October 27th.

Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, has organized a meeting at a resort, where the party has booked 50 rooms so he can personally meet the bereaved families and express his condolences. A family member of the victims told reporters in Karur, "They have arranged a bus for us to reach the venue. Many of us are going."

This proposed meeting has sparked public debate. Some criticized the actor for arranging travel and accommodation to meet the affected families. They said the actor could have gone to Karur to console the victims. However, the party claimed that this arrangement was made because Vijay had not received permission from the authorities to meet the victims in Karur.

Perumal of Velusamypuram, who lost his minor daughters, told reporters that it was inappropriate for the affected families to meet the leader. He said, "He should meet the families." At present, the injured are unlikely to be among those traveling to Mahabalipuram.
