Few Tamil films from 2017 have stayed with audiences the way 'Maragadha Naanayam' did. The low-budget fantasy comedy about a cursed emerald coin became a surprise blockbuster. Its mix of ghost comedy and heist adventure was rare in Kollywood at the time. Eight years later, the coin is back in play.
The makers of director A R K Saravan's 'Maragadha Naanayam 2' released the film's first look poster on Saturday, and fans of the franchise were delighted. The film stars Aadhi, Nikki Galrani and Priya Bhavani Shankar.
Production house Passion Studios shared the poster on social media and wrote: "Chase. Heist. Mystery. Fantasy. People. All driven by one obsession - The Maragadha Naanayam. Presenting the first look of #MaragadhaNaanayam2 | #MaragadhaMani2. Written and Directed by @ArkSaravan_Dir. Starring @aadhiofficial @priya_Bshankar @nikkigalrani #Sathyaraj."
That one caption gives an early idea of the tone. "Chase" and "heist" point to a more action-driven story this time. "Mystery" and "fantasy" suggest the supernatural world of the first film will grow wider rather than simply repeat itself.
From pooja to wrap-up to first look
The sequel went on floors with a grand pooja ceremony in Chennai in February this year. Passion Studios released a visual glimpse earlier in the year. By May, actor Daniel Annie Pope, who plays a pivotal role, confirmed that shooting had wrapped.
In an Instagram post about the film's unit, Pope wrote, "From laughs between takes to memories that will stay forever… And just like that, the shoot of 'Maragatha Naanayam 2' is officially wrapped!"
He added, "More than a film, this felt like a beautiful family reunion filled with chaos, fun, bonding, late-night shoots, endless smiles, and unforgettable moments. Every frame carried love, every day carried energy, and every person here made this journey special."
He ended his note with, "Can't wait for everyone to witness the magic we created together. Until then… memories packed, emotions wrapped, and hearts full."
Why the sequel carries weight
Fantasy comedies are hard to get right. The humour needs good timing and the world needs to feel believable, and the original managed both. That is why producer Sudhan Sundaram of Passion Studios has positioned the sequel as a theatrical event rather than a routine follow-up.
"I am delighted to produce Maragadha Naanayam 2, a project close to my heart, as I am a massive fan of the original blockbuster. This is a prestigious endeavor designed to draw universal crowds to theatres with its magical entertainment. Like the first part, Aadhi and Priya Bhavani Shankar play the lead roles. Shot on a grander canvas with an expanded star-cast, we are committed to delivering the ultimate entertainer," he had said.
The production line-up supports that claim. The film is produced by Sudhan Sundaram, Manish Singhal, Durgaram Choudhary, Dev and KV Durai under Passion Studios, Dangal TV, RDC Media, Axess Film Factory and Good Show. Backing from several banners, including names known outside Tamil Nadu, points to wider ambitions for the sequel.
Besides Aadhi and Priya Bhavani Shankar, the cast includes Sathyaraj, Nikki Galrani Pinisetty, Munishkanth, Anandaraj, Daniel Annie Pope, Arunraja Kamaraj and Muruganandam.
Dhibu Ninan Thomas has composed the music, and PV Shankar handles cinematography. NK Rahul is the art director, and Thirumalai Rajan R is the editor. Rajesh Kannan has written the dialogues, and PC Stunts has choreographed the action.
With the first look out, the makers are expected to reveal more promotional material and a release date soon.
